The Grand Duke

Aberdeen Gilbert & Sullivan Society is proud to present this story of satire, sedition and sausage rolls!
A travelling troupe of actors plot to overthrow the despised Grand Duke of Pfennig-Halbpfennig, but they find themselves embroiled in the country’s curious system of ‘Statutory Duels’ fought using playing cards. Complications ensue thanks to nitwit nobles, legal absurdities, mistaken identities and multiple marriages… ‘The Grand Duke’ was the 14th and final Gilbert & Sullivan operetta, originally staged in 1896.
With only 2 professional Scottish tours in the 19th century, and only 6 previous amateur versions in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Ayr since 1905, this latest Aberdeen G&S production is a rare chance for audiences to enjoy the North-East of Scotland debut of this hidden treasure of topsy-turvydom.
